The JV and Varsity Boys Basketball teams took on some different competition over Thanksgiving weekend. They traveled to North Miami to take over the Balmer Classic for the second straight year. The JV won their first game 64-20 with Colton Paxson scoring a game-high of 20 points. Then they took on North Miami in the Championship and won 69-37. The Varsity played Fort Wayne Smith Academy and won 71-47. Three players scored in double digits (Bower 17, Roush 13, Pugh 10).
They had tremendous bench play. The Raiders advanced to the Championship and took on North Miami also winning 76-62. Bower was again leading scorer with 21 then followed by Roush with 17. This makes both teams two-time defending champs.

Girls Season off to a Quick Start
The Lady Raiders are 3-2 at this point of the season under new head coach Jessica Killingbeck. The Jv Lady Raiders are also 3-2. The Lady Raiders are averaging about 45 points per game and only giving up about 38 points per game. The Lady Raiders next game is Saturday at Wabash JV starts at 6. After taking a year off Kirtlyn Noble seems to be back in the groove of things. She is a good post presence to compliment our good guard trio of Jessica Yencer, Georgia Hanauer, and Jenna Eltzroth. Senior leader Jada Johnson seems to be a good all-around player. Our bench has great depth with Kelli Neff, Kristen Roupp, Juniper Tucker, Malinah Dixon, and Courtney Lemler. Another key part of our team is Sarah Bothast with her nice jumper and ability to get boards.

NFL Anthem Kneeling
The NFL has been in the news a lot lately because most of the players have been kneeling for the national anthem. The kneeling all started with one player his name is Colin Kaepernick. The reason he started to kneel was because he wanted unity for all races. President Trump has come out and said that "The NFL needs to fire the players that kneel." This just fueled the fire for all of the NFL players that now have beef with Trump. I personally believe that all NFL players shouldn't have to stand for the anthem. The soldiers fought for our freedom. That is why everyone should do what they believe in if it means kneeling or standing.

Football Sectional

Southern Wells football has 2 games left in the regular season. SW plays at home vs Heritage for senior night and then they travel to South Adams for their last game of the regular season. Then the Southern Wells Raiders travel to Eastside for their first sectional game. Eastside has beaten 2 of the sectional teams and lost to 1. They beat Adams Central and Fremont and lost to Churubusco. Churubusco look like the favorite to win the sectional as they play Northfield in the first round. A big first-round game is South Adams vs Adams Central and Northfield vs Churubusco. These 2 games are big games for this sectional.

Las Vegas Shooting
As we all know the Las Vegas shooting was very devastating to the country. Many were killed and even more injured. Here are some of the people who died during the concert. Afghanistan veteran, Christopher Roybal. In July Roybal wrote a Facebook post, "My response has always been the same, not one filled with a sense of pride or ego, but an answer filled with truth and genuine fear/anger," he wrote. "What's it like to be shot at? It's a nightmare no amount of drugs, no amount of therapy and no amount of drunk talks with you war veteran buddies will ever be able to escape." Hannah Ahlers, a stay at home mom of 3 was shot in the head while dancing with her husband of 17 years. Denise Salmon who was on vacation with her husband was also shot. Carrie Barnette, a 10-year Disney employee, also died in the attack. These are just some of the many that were killed in this tragic shooting. The only information really known about the gunman is that he was 64 years old who was retired and divorced twice with no children. He did not really have a criminal background before the shooting. What he did will never be forgotten, for he killed and injured so many who were trying to enjoy themselves at the concert. They did not deserve what happened to them but as a country, we will come together to get through this.

Chris Penzenik, Teacher of the Week!!
| Mr. Penzenik is this week's teacher of the week! Originally from South Bend, now his first year at Southern Wells, he is in his 9th year of teaching! He has taught all over the state and recently earned his masters degree in Furniture and Design. He is also the sponsor of the drama club. Though he is the art teacher he also played soccer for 16 years! his hobbies also include making art, writing, playing board games, building models, playing frisbee golf, hiking, camping and spending time with friends. HIs favorite part of Southern Wells is the positive attitude from all the students and staff, he thinks that the fact that so many want to be apart of the school atmosphere outside of the classroom is so awesome. His favorite thing about art is that it always tells a story. Whether that be through an illustration where the picture literally shows what a story says or through art history, where you are learning the story of an artist and why they created their art, art will give you a visual into a story. He would also like to travel to Western Ukraine to explore the area where his family came from. |
