The Race

Today after school there will be the race of a lifetime, you can't miss it.  The boring school teacher Ben Burman, against the man, the state qualifier, thee Grant Harris. At 3:10 Grant and Burms will be racing in a 100 meter race. Make sure you make it out to the track after school, and watch this race.  You don't want to miss it.

Student of The Week

Its about that time for a Student of The Week! This time around, Sabrina Miller has been chosen. Sabrina has not just one, but three favorite teachers. Those teachers are Mrs. Hunter, Mr. Fouts, and Mrs. Hanauer. While we are on the subject of stuff about school, her favorite subject is math because she is good at it, and she likes going to school in a circle because you can't get lost. When Sabrina grows up she wants to be an EMT. With regards to the most controversial sandwich name in history, to her, it is a cheese toasty, it just so happens to be that her favorite food is her mom's spaghetti. If Sabrina could be any animal, she would be a dog so she could have a loving family to spend time with every day.  Florida is a destination for many, and it just so happens to be a destination for Sabrina as well because she would go there if she could go anywhere.
In her spare time, Sabrina likes to be outside a lot, go mudding, and help others if they need it. Her favorite music is country and her favorite artists are Luke Bryan, Florida Georgia Line, and Rascal Flatts. It just so happens to be that her celebrity crush Luke Bryan is also one of her favorite artists. Sabrina's middle name is Ann, and her favorite vehicle is the 1952 Ford F1 truck because old cars and trucks remind her of her grandpa.

Raider Softball Falls to The Starfires

On Monday night, the Raider Softball team took on the South Adams Starfires in their fourth game and first conference game of the season. To start the game, Freshman Markie Price started the game pitching for the Raiders. She gave up 8 runs on 7 hits, she also had 3 walks with 2 strikeouts. Senior Brooke Kratzer came in at the bottom of the third inning to finish the game. She gave up 1 run on three hits. Kratzer had 3 walks. The Raiders had a slow start with hitting. The Raiders had nine hits total all in the 6th and 7th inning. Bree Penrod had 2 hits and a RBI, Senior Lela Knowles had a single, Savannah Ocasio had two singles, Markie Price had one single, Senior Savannah DeaKyne had one double, and Senior Meghan Yencer had a single with 2 RBIs. The Raiders fell to the Starfires 9-4.

JV Lady Raiders Have a Tough Loss Against the Indians

Last night, the JV played their first softball game. The Raiders started off with a first time ever pitcher and catcher. The Raiders struggled in the first inning. They had some good plays and hits, but not enough to win. The JV Raiders lost 20 to 2.

Raiders lose to the Braves

The Raiders traveled to Fort Wayne to play Blackhawk Christian on Tuesday night. Both teams came out and earned a run in the first inning. After that the Raiders were outscored in 4 out of the 6 remaining innings. The Raiders ended up falling to the Braves by a final score of 14-5. The Raiders ended the night with 8 hits. Junior Jacey Dunnuck led the team in hits with 3, Dunnuck also connected for the Raiders first home run of the season. Jacey ended the night with a .750 batting average for the game. Brad Woodward had a pair of hits for himself as he hit .500 for the night. Triston Niblick was the losing pitcher for the Raiders.

Bailey's Book of the Week!!

This weeks book was When Dad Killed Mom by Julius Lester. One review from The Bulletin said that "Readers will be caught up by the fast flowing current of emotion, events, and revelations." This review is very accurate, I was so caught up in this book I could picture it in my head.  The story is told from the viewpoint of the children Jenna and Jeremy. At first Jenna is telling her side of the story and she is on her dads side even though he killed her mom. Jeremy on the other hand is on his moms side and thinks that his dad is a monster. The kids are in school when they hear the awful news about their mother. They go and live with their mothers best friend as the investigation and trial of their dad is going on. Over the months that the trial and investigation are taking place family secrets from the past are being dug up. Secrets about their dad and his ex-wife, secrets about their grandpa, and why his relationship with their dad went sour. This book is a cliff-hanging, drama filled, has you on the edge of your seat, mystery/thriller book. I definitely give this book a five out of five star rating.

The Best Days of Our Lives

With the coming back from Spring Break, the last couple months of school fly by. Not going to lie, I'm ready for something new. I have loved my time here at the good ole Southern Wells High School, but all good things must come to an end. All I have heard for the past couple weeks is, "Ugh, Senoritis is so real." I believe every bit of this. It has honestly been a struggle to do my homework or anything that has to do with school. I dread coming to school every morning. Having said that, I don't want to be anywhere else. High school is a very important time in our lives. Here lately, I have been told by several people that these high school days are the best days of our lives. I really hope those people are wrong. With becoming older, we will gain more responsibilities and become educated adults. Right now, we need to take in these "last" moments. We have had our last Friday night football games at Carnes Field and our last games in the Raider Dome. We need to make sure we make the most of everything we do. I believe that our senior days will not be the best days of our lives. However, nothing after this will be the same. Go to everything you can, talk to the kid you used to be best friends with in elementary school that you don't talk to anymore, work hard on that presentation. Do your best in everything because here in the next few months, nothing will be the same.

Raider Baseball Falls To Oak Hill

The Southern Wells Raiders had their home opener on Monday. The Raiders got out to an early lead, but could not hold on to it. Although the Raiders home opener did not go as they wanted it to, they saw early improvements to this season. With it being the second game of the year the raiders plan to keep improving with the many games left in the season. Senior Triston Niblick had the start followed by relievers, Cody Bass, and Jacey Dunnuck. Southern Wells will be in action Wednesday against the Norwell Knights.

Weird day for Track at Eastbrook

On Thursday, the Raiders traveled to Eastbrook, but not for a normal Track meet. There was no shot put or discus events because the rings were "flooded." When we arrived there, we saw for ourselves that the rings weren't really wet at all. Taking away the throwing events took away 26 points we would've had. Also, Eastbrook has pole vault, which gave them even more points. We did not count this as an actual meet because of the shot put and discus not being thrown.

NCAA Women's Basketball Championship

The game was between The Uconn Huskies vs Notre Dame for the second straight year in a row. This year though both teams are not undefeated. Now as you may know Notre Dame lost 79 - 58 to Uconn Huskies for the to finish 40 and 0 on the season. This year both teams combined only had three losses. Uconn was going for three in a row and 5 out of the last seven. Notre Dame has been in the championship four out of the l5 years. Now this is a brief history on the two teams now it time to talk about the game's result. Uconn won by a final score of 63 to 53 it was a good game throughout but Notre Dame could not close the gap. This gave Uconn it's 10 championship and Uconn coach Geno Auriemma his 10. The only other two with 10 titles as a coach in a major sport is Phi Jackson and John Wooden. Next year one of Uconn players will be going for four in a row championship and final four outstanding player of year. Notre dame best player is leaving for the WNBA. Her name is Jewell Loyd she was a junior. Now for next year I think Uconn will win again and Notre dame will get to the elite eight and lose.
 

Grant Harris' Journey Back to State

Grant Harris now a junior at Southern Wells is starting his third year on the track team. Grant is returning from his very impressive sophomore season where he finished 7th place in the state for discus. Last season Grant was an All State thrower, and first team all conference, and Sectional and Regional champion. Grant is planning on making back to state this year and looking to place better than he did last year. With already having the Southern Wells High School record Grant is just aiming for beating his own. Grant and his main throwing partner Keaton Coleman plan on getting first and second place in shot-put all season long. Keaton's goal in to join Grant at the 2015 state finals for high jump and for shot-put.

Student of The Week

Its about that time again this week, so its time for a new Student of The Week! Junk, Emilee Junk. She is our student of the week for this awesome week in April. Emilee's favorite teacher is Mr. Burman and her favorite subject is English because she likes to write and express her feelings. I asked her how she felt about going to school in a circle she said, " I feel once I leave Southern Wells I will never be able to walk in a straight line again because I am so used to walking in a circle to all my classes." After some further education, Emilee wants to be a marketing director and work in a large city like New York! Some other information about Emilee Her middle name is Ann, her celebrity crush is no other than the late Paul Walker, and if she could be any animal she would be a bird because it would be so cool to fly! Emilee's favorite type of food is Italian and to her, on the most controversial sandwich known to mankind, its name is a cheese toasty! If Emilee could go anywhere, she would go to Bora Bora for its beautiful landscape and warm temperatures. In her free time Emilee likes to go shopping, hanging out with her friends, and then in the summers going to lakes. When it comes to cars, Emilee has fast tastes considering her favorite car is of the McLaren because she was able to ride in one last summer. Lastly Emilee's favorite type of music would either have to be country or rap she says, and right now her favorite artist is Kendrick Lamar.

Wisconsin Vs Duke

Monday night the college men's national championship took place.  The game took place in Indianapolis, at Lucas Oil Stadium.  The final game was between Wisconsin and Duke.  Wisconsin was coming off the huge win over the undefeated Kentucky Wildcats.  Duke coming off a huge win also beating Michigan State by an easy 20 points. The Wisconsin Badgers were the favorite heading into the game, because they had such a good tournament, and great season.  The Duke Blue Devils were also coming off a very good tournament and season. Frank Kaminsky and Jahlil Okafor started the with the tip.  Throughout the first half the game was back and fourth both teams having the spurts and runs.  Frank Kaminsky had a great first half getting Duke's best player Okafor in foul trouble.  With little playing time though, Tyus Jones, a freshman for Duke, stepped up big time.  The game was all tied up at halftime with a score of 31-31.  To start off the second half Wisconsin went up to as many as 8 at one point.  Getting Okafor in foul trouble was a huge part of why Wisconsin had such a successful time scoring inside with Kaminsky.  Like usual though Duke came back with their run to tie up the game once again.  Tyus Jones came up huge though with 19 points in the second half to take the lead.  Down the stretch though Duke's high powered offense was just too much for the Badgers of Wisconsin.  Tyus Jones named player of the game finishing with 23 points. Wisconsin's leading scorer for the game was Frank Kaminsky ending up with 21 points, and 12 rebounds.  The final score would end up being 68-63. Duke won it's fifth national championship.  Both teams had great seasons, and both are expected to have great seasons next year as well.

Golf Preview

This years golf team & staff are looking quite astounding, probably the best looking team to come through this school. With the Cam Lightle and Tristen Hanauer golfing at 1 and 2, and the juniors John Gearheart and Tanner Thompson golfing the 3 and 4! We also have Ben Shaffer and Damion Watters facing off for the 5 spot and Blake Dollier in the Novice position. The staff for this years team is just impeccable the newcomer Ben Burman who is playing a huge role for the team this year as a reminder to strive for greatness so you don't end up as bad as him. And as always the veteran Charles Harris aka Ez Harris is really just molding the team into a state contender, with his help there is no doubt that this years team will be the best ever. And we cant forget about the man in charge, Ross Palmer, its been rumored that before Ross began his teaching career he had a very bright future in golf, some went as far as saying he could have won the PGA tour in his prime, but Ross ended up taking the more challenging road and is now a 5th grade teacher. We will be sure to keep you posted on how this years team does when they kick off the season next week with a BIG match against Mississinewa on Thursday!

Student of The Week

     Now that everyone has returned from spring break it is time for another student of the week! Student of the week for the week following spring break is Hope acuna! When Hope comes to school her favorite subject is history for many reasons. She also does not have just one favorite teacher, she likes all her teacher the same! When asked about how she felt about going to school in a circle, she felt indifferent. Hope wants to go on to be a child psychologist after high school and inevitably some college. Elise is Hope's middle name, and she does not really have a celebrity crush, because she believes there are none worth crushing over right now. When asked if she could go anywhere and why she said," If i could go anywhere it would be Austrailia, because kangaroos." Kangaroos are really cool, however hope considers a cat or a kitty as she phrased it as the animal she would be if she could be an animal. Hope's favorite meal is pizza, and to her the name of the highly controversial sandwhich is a "grilled cheese". Some of her favorite things to do in her free time are painting, writing and spending time with her friends. Hope's favorite type of car is a "working" one. When asked about her favorite type of music, she says she likes a lot of different types leaning more towards the eclectic side of things, but she despises country. Right now her favorite band is Real Friends, she says they are brilliant!

NCAA March Madness Bracket Challenge Updates

Here is a quick update for the students and staff that filled out brackets for the S-Dub Hub online challenge. Sophomore Cameron Cook is sitting in first place with all four of his final four teams in. Cameron has Kentucky playing Duke in the championship with Kentucky winning with a final score of 75-69. Keep checking the bracket to see if anyone can surpass Cameron and win the special grand prize. The final four is this Saturday and the final game is this Sunday in Indianapolis. Tune in to see if anyone can take down the 38-0 Kentucky Wildcats or if they will be the second team to ever finish with a perfect record.

Spring Break Vacation with Campus Life

I went with Campus Life to Orlando Florida. It took 23 hours to get up three on bus. The reason it took so long was one of the buses had mechanical  problems. It took about an extra hour to fix and we were caught in bad traffic making it 23 hours on bus. When we got there we took our luggage out from under the bus and went up to our rooms The boys and girls were in  different condo's in the Orange Lake Resort. After this we went to a restaurant meeting room to have Campus Life Club. Campus Life Club is where we play games and learn about God. We had team meeting  as a school after this talking about what we learned at club that night. All this was done around 11p.m. and the boys and girls went back to the their condo's to go to bed. Our boys condo woke up at 9:40 am and we had to go to be at the meeting room by 10 am. After this we went to the beach and we did this two days out of the week. We swimed everyday by our condo and hang out as a school and other schools. As a group we meet a lot of people during this trip. Overall this trip was a great success to learn about god and have fun with friends.

Mr. Butler's Excellence in Education Award

Southern Wells High School teacher David Butler is the March winner of NBC33's Excellence In Education Award for March. He was nominated by Shanda Miller who wrote a very endearing letter to help secure his win. Butler teaches Biology and other related classes, and is highly admired and respected by his students, many of whom are part of a large Biology Club at the school.

Mr. Butler prides himself in making his classes unique and fun, but also consistently challenging his students to work hard and improve themselves. His class room features a bit of a mini - zoo with several snakes, "Lizzy The Lizard", and a tarantula.

Student of The Week

         Jacob Weldy, you may see him around the circle as you go from class to class. There is a specific reason for that, not only is it because he goes to Southern Wells and is forced to walk around the circle, but he likes going to school in a circle because he says going to school in a circle is easier to get around. Weldy's favorite subject is history because he loves hearing about past events, and when he grows up he wants to be a firefighter. An interesting tidbit about Jacob Weldy is he moved up from Alabama so many people just call him Bama as a nickname. Bama's full name is Jacob Edward Weldy, and his celebrity crush is Jennifer Lawrence, and if Bama could go anywhere he would go to Australia because he has heard it is amazing, and it has always been a dream of his. Bama's favorite meal is steak and tators, I don't know how he likes his tators but the mere idea of the two being combined seems delicious and enticing. Some other things about Weldy, If he could be any animal he would be a lion, he likes to hangout with friends, go to rodeos, and go muddin, and lastly and probably the most important part to him the very controversial sandwich is titled a "cheese toastie". Jacob's favorite car is a 1972 chevelle because they are nice, fast and he loves working on them. Finally Bama's favorite music certainly fits his nickname because his favorite music is country, and his favorite artist is Garth Brooks.

Jessica's Book of the Week

Last week I did a review on The Selection by Kiera Cass, following that review, this week's Book of the Week is The Elite, the second book in The Selection Series. 

Julie (screen name) rated The Elite a one out of five stars. She thought that nothing really happened throughout the book. She thought that it was crazy how Maxon still loved America even though she never showed him the love he deserved. She thought that America was too whiny and had a bad attitude. Julie thought that the book was poorly written and does not advise anyone to read this book.
Ruth (screen name) rated The Elite a five out of five stars. She loved the book and how it was written. She loved how Cass really tied her into the story. Ruth loved how the book was an emotional roller coast. She loved how the book was written and highly recommend this book to anyone.

I would rate The Elite a five out of five stars. I read this book in one day. I absolutely loved this book. I loved how America wasn't afraid to still be herself. She was as sparky as ever. Maxon was so dedicated to America. I highly recommend this book! 

Track & Field Preview

This year's track team is much bigger than it has been in the past. In the last few years, we have had very low numbers, but this year we have close to 45 track members, which is very exciting. Seniors this year are: Jared McIntire, Ethan Smith, Jacob Roush, Brad Woodward, Daniel Beeks, Drew Rockwell, Jacob Stout, and Meghan Yencer. We have two returning ACAC champions for the boys: Grant Harris in Discus, and Keaton Coleman in High Jump. Grant also won sectionals and regionals, and placed seventh in state for Discus. For the girls, Meghan Yencer was a part of the ACAC champion 4x800 team last year. We have three home meets this year. The first meet is a tri meet with Blackford and Jay county, the next is Bluffton, and then another tri meet with Heritage and Adams Central. Come out and support

Raider Baseball Preview

The Southern Wells Raider Baseball Team started their season on Monday. The raiders returning from a loosing record last year look to turn things around this coming season. The raiders, under coach Painter, look to change the image on the baseball team from recent years. The raiders go by the motto "Next Pitch" although the official practice started Monday, some of the raiders have been hard at work since January. The raiders led by seniors Brad Woodward, Tristan Niblick, and Austin Wells, the team has high expectations on the year, and look to perform at a high level. The Raiders first game is April 1, at Muncie Burris.

THE VOICE!!!

With a late start to our annual VOICE column we are now already on the battle rounds and artist are coming out and swinging! In my personal opinion the coach with the best chance of winning is most likely Pharrell. He has so many powerhouse singers that are just absolutely incredible! Adam had a late start this year but ended up being the first coach to fill his team this, Adam has been the reigning king of four chair turns but this year its probably a toss up between Pharrell and Blake. Jessica's Book of the Week

This week's book of the week is The Selection by Kiera Cass.
Hannah (screen name) rated The Selection a one out of five stars. She thought that America (main character) just whined that whole time. She thought that Cass did a great job at making America a whiney, ungrateful little teenager.  Hannah thought that the book was uneventful and boring. She didn't like the characters and overall she thought that the book was a waste of time.
Emily (screen name) rated The Selection a five out of five stars. She loved the plot. She loved how the characters were lost at times but at the same time still around. Emily also liked how America was displayed a feisty nature. Overall Emily really liked The Selection. 
I would rate The Selection a five out of five stars. I loved this book! As soon as I sat down to read it, I couldn't stop. I loved all the characters. The twisted love stories made my head spin and my heart happy. I highly recommend you read this book!   

Student of The Week

Mac, J-rod, Bulldog, This guy goes by many names but his real name is Jarod McIntire. Mac, we can call him for this purpose, is man of different qualities. Some of the things Mac likes are cars and music. Mac's favorite type of music is rock, and his favorite band just happens to be Blue October. Mac's favorite car is an el camino because he likes the way that they look. When asked about how he feels about going to school in a circle he says, " he doesn't think much about it." Mac's favorite teacher and subject are Mr. Penrod and business class, because he wants to go to college for business. Mac's celebrity crush is Anna Kendricks, and if he could go anywhere he would go to Rome because he one day wants to see the coliseum. Mac likes to watch movies in his free time, as well as have some pizza as that is his favorite food. Along the Lines of favorite animals, for Mac, his is a sloth! With regards to the timeless argument on whether it is a grilled cheese or a cheese toastie, to MAc it is a grilled cheese. Lastly McIntire is a fan of muscle cars, we can tell this because his favorite car is an El Camino.

St Francis Art Show

The University of Saint Francis School of Creative Arts is currently featuring their 39th annual High School Art Exhibition at the Weatherhead Gallery in the Rolland Center for Art and Visual Communication. In this year’s exhibition, students from 28 different high schools in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio submitted over 200 artworks. Southern Wells High School students Joana Juarez, Kari Rains, Michael Roose, and Elijah Vance all submitted artworks that will be on display in the gallery from March 5-22.

An opening reception and awards presentation was held March 5, with awards given to the most outstanding works in the display. Southern Wells senior Kari Rains received one of ten Honorable Mention awards for her printmaking project titled Diving for Adventure. Cassidy Emenhiser of Adams Central High school won the third place award, Erin Mawhorter of West Noble High School won the second place award, and Dylan Stewart of Bedford High School won the first place award. Best of Show was awarded to Coleman Geiger of Carroll High School. Awards were provided by United Art and Education, Papier’s Creative Framing, Northside Galleries, and Crestwoods Frame Shop and Gallery. Ann Shive, owner of Crestwoods Frame Shop and Gallery judged this year’s exhibition.

The exhibition is free and open to the public.  Weatherhead Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am-5 pm, Saturday from 10 am-5 pm, and Sunday from 1-5 pm.

Student of the Week

   

Lisa Campbell is Student of the week for the first week in march! Lisa is an 8th grader here at Southern Wells Jr.-Sr. High School, and she likes going to school in a circle because she gets to pass all of her friends in the hallway and its easy to get to class. Lisa's favorite subject is math and her favorite teacher is Mrs. Paxson. Lisa's favorite subject is math because Mrs. Meeks her math teacher helped her get her grade up and does the best for Lisa. Like wise, Mrs. Paxson is Lisa's favorite teacher because she is funny and does what is right for her. After she grows up Lisa wants to be a singer or a veterinarian. In her spare time Lisa likes to dance, sing, take selfies, and read The Bible. Some other info about lisa is that her middle name is Lynn, her favorite meal to eat is little caesar's pizza and their breadsticks, and if she could be an animal she would be an eagle because she could fly and be free. To Lisa it is grilled cheese, and she says that her mom makes the best one! Her favorite car is a vw bug or a lamborghini, and her favorite band is R5, and her favorite type of music is christian music. Lastly If Lisa could go anywhere she would go to Judea, West Asia because thats where Jesus died, her celebrity crush is Teo Halm, and she prefers movies because with movies she says you can actually see it happening rather than just picturing it happening.

B.A.D. Boys Series Premiere

After the surprise trailer last week, there has been a lot of buzz about B.A.D. Boys. Many of you have been thinking that it was a movie, but in fact it is actually our new series. In the aftermath of the pie prank, Drew has gone rogue. The detectives of Blake and Austin were then put on the case.. Find out more in the episode.

Jessica's Book of the Week

This week's book of the week is Every Day by David Levithan.
Komal (screen name) rated Every Day a one out of five stars. She thought that Levithan had a great idea, but just didn't explain it enough to actually be a good book. She had so many unanswered questions. She was just looking for more answers, more clues throughout the book, and the clues never came, which made Komal upset and made the book pointless. Komal, like Levithan writing style, but he just didn't do a good enough job on writing this book.
Belkis (screen name) rated Every Day a five out of five stars. She was amazed by the plot and the idea of Levithan's book. She loves how as a reader you got to see so many lives of everybody. She just loved how Levithan caught the feelings of all the main character and how the words on the page just came alive before her very eyes. Belkis just loved the book.

I would rate Every Day a three out of five stars. I did like the plot, but it wasn't developed enough for me. There were so many loose ends that weren't tied up. I just had so many questions, but I do feel like Levithan did a great job about pulling me in from the beginning. It's not a bad book, just not a great one either.

Raiders go down in tough double OT loss

Friday night the Raiders traveled to Union City for their last regular season game. The game was off to a very slow start for both teams with the first quarter ending at 4-7. The second quarter was not much better. The Raiders lost Evan Huffman in the second quarter due to a cut above his eye. He had to be taken to the hospital. Going into halftime the Raiders trailed 12-18. The third quarter was better for the Raiders, as they outscored the Indians 11-5. The fourth quarter came right down to the last seconds as Keaton Coleman hit a three with about a minute left. Union City held the ball for the last shot, but missed a step back three. The game was tied at 33 and going into overtime. It was very close as both teams scored 6, but it too came right down to the last seconds with Keaton Coleman drilling a three with five seconds left to tie the game at 39. The Raiders at this point have had two players foul out: Jake Roush and Gavin Barcus. In the second overtime, were outscored 18-9, with two more players fouling out: Triston Niblick and Hunter Schreiber. The game ended at 57-48 due to all the free throws Union City made at the end of the game. The Raiders will be playing Cowan in the first round of sectionals at Monroe Central on Tuesday. The only thing the picture above is missing is a caption. So, for this instance I will supply a sort of informative caption about the person in the right of the picture with the ball. Number 23 on the right who is running the ball is a guy by the name of Jacob Roush. Jacob, by the picture you can obviously tell that he plays football. How ever, Jacob, or  Jake as many people including my self refer to him as  does a lot more than that. Besides just playing football, Jake also plays basketball, and when he goes off to college after he wants to become a physical therapist. Jakes favorite class at school would have to be student servicing for Mr. Mann our athletic director, how ever his favorite teacher is Mr. Fouts. Jake's favorite food is his mom's fried chicken and gravy, If he could go anywhere he would go to Hawaii, his favorite animal is a tiger, and his celebrity crush is Jennifer Aniston. When asked how he feels about going to school in a circle he said he liked it because its simple and pretty easy to get around. Although I don't really agree with him, Jake says that it is a fact it is a cheese toasty. In his spare time, Jake likes to play sports and play Xbox with his friends, his favorite car is a bugatti veyron because they are really fast and they are a sleek looking car. Lastly Jakes favorite type of music is rap, and his favorite artist is either Montana of 300 or Young Buck. If you see Jake passing through the hallway besure to give him a high-five!

Raiders roll over Bruins

Friday night the Raiders took on the Blackford Bruins to get their third win of the season. The game was tied early in the first quarter at 5, but then the Raiders took a quick lead and finished the first quarter at 18-8. The halftime score was 34-17. The Raiders finished strong with a 34 point victory at 64-30. Leading scorers were Keaton Coleman with 20, Jake Roush and Jordan Bower each had 7, and Bryce Bonewit added 6. The Raiders will be back in action Tuesday night against Wes-del. It's senior night, so come out and support.

Lionel Messi

Messi is one of the best players in the league if not the best. He hold several records one of which being 86 goals in a single calendar year which is incredible considering it is a high scoring when a team scores 4 points in a game. IU Purdue Basketball Game Recap

Last night was the second meeting between IU and Purdue.  The game was played at Assembly Hall.  At the beginning of the game IU started off with a huge alley oop by Hanner Mosquera-Perea, he caught is with one hand and slammed it.  The game was tight all the way through the first half, and IU had a two point lead going into half.  To start the second half Jon Octeus had a posterizing dunk over Collin Hartman in the middle of the lane.  Octeus caught it on the wing and drove to through the middle of the lane, then Hartman tried to take a charge but just couldn't get there in time.  Purdue also got on a huge run to start the second half up by as many as 12 at one point.  IU by the end of the game tried to make a run, and come back and win.  IU just didn't have enough in the tank to do so though.  Purdue came into Assembly Hall and upset the Hoosiers with a statement win with the final score of 67-63 Boilermakers.  A.J. Hammons was the leading scorer for Purdue with 20 points.  For IU Yogi Ferrell was the leading scorer with 21 points.  The Hoosiers will be back in action on Sunday against Rutgers.  Purdue will also be back in action Thursday against Rutgers.

Raiders Host the Bruins Friday Night at the Raiderdome

Friday the 20th the Raiders play the Blackford. The prediction for the game is the Raiders by 5 (predicted by John Harrell). The Raiders look to get their third win of the season while the Bruins look to get their first win. It is the youth night for the Raiders Jr. High. Come to the Raiderdome and support the Raiders. JV tips off at 6 PM.

Student of the Week

 For student of the week we have Jessica Williams. To start things off, Jessica prefers books over movies because they were made first, and generally have more facts that the movies leave out. With regards towards her at school, Jessica's favorite class is english, and her favorite teacher is Mrs. Smith. Jessica likes going to school in a circle, because she never has to worry about getting lost. When jessica grows up she wants to be a pediatric nurse. Some other information about Jessica is that her middle name is Kay, her celebrity crush is Evan Peters, and if she could go anywhere she would go to Europe because there are lots of cities that she would love to visit and she couldn't just pick one. To jessica, it is a grilled cheese sandwich but she often uses both phrases a "grilled cheese sandwich" and a "cheese toastie". Jessica's favorite food is pizza, and if she could be an animal she would be a red panda. In her spare time she likes to read, watch movies, hang out with friends, and go to concerts. On the side note Jessica's favorite car is the 60's VW bug. Lastly, Jessica's favorite music genre is Pop-punk and her favorite band right now is Real Friends.

Raiders Finally Fall

On Monday night, the Lady Raiders fell to the Monroe Central Lady Bears. It was a close game the whole game. During the first quarter the Raiders scored 6 while the Bears scored 8 points. As the girls battled through another eight minutes, both teams scored 4 points. The Raiders trailed at half 10 to 12. The Raiders came out scoring 12 points in the third quarter, while the Bears only scored 6 points. In the fourth quarter the Raiders trailed to the Bears with about 7 seconds left. Unfortunately, the Raiders couldn't get a shot off to tie the game. The Raiders finished the season 11:14. It was a good season for the girls, and a huge thank you to the seniors, for everything they've done. Good luck in the years to come.

Raiders Fall To Cowan

The Southern Wells boys varsity boys basketball team fell to Cowan on Saturday at Cowan. The boys lost 56-42 in a non-conference game. The Raiders had troubles getting rebounds, which allowed Cowan to take advantage and get second chance baskets. The Raiders could have another chance at Cowan later in the year in sectionals. The Raiders will be back in action this Friday against Blackford.

Jessica's Book of the Week

This week's book of the week is If I Stay by Gayle Forman.
Jess (screen name) rated If I Stay two out of five stars. She thought that the book was poorly written. Jess found the book way too cheesey. She thought that the characters were so cliche, because they were every teen's fantasy people. Jess thought that Forman was writing the book as a dream not as a rela story. Overall Jess just didn't find the book amusing or a good read.
Pavlina (screen name) rated If I stay five out five stars. She loved the book. She loved the characters and the overall plot of the story. Pavlina liked how the book used music to connect the characters to one another. She loved the characters love story and thought that it well written. Pavlina liked how Forman used flashbacks to explain their love story. Overall she loved the book.
I would rate If I Stay 4.5 out of 5 stars, because I really liked it, but I thought there were parts where it could've developed more. I was kinda confused at parts, but I loved how the characters connected through music. It's a great read, I'd highly recommended it.

Raiders Lose To The Warriors

Thursday night the Raiders traveled to Woodlan to play the Warriors. The Raiders came out strong as they have in recent games. The Raiders had the lead at the end of the first quarter and were down 1 at halftime. During the break the Raiders made their adjustments for the second half. The third and fourth quarter were much like the first two. The Raiders gave it their all but fell short to Woodlan 56-50. Keaton Coleman led the team with 16 points and Evan Huffman had 15 points. The Raiders play again on Saturday at Cowan with the JV starting at noon.

Student of the Week

William Westfall is the student of the week! Some fairly interesting information about Will Westfall is that he prefers books because books give you a longer story and has all kinds of descriptive details that the movies leave out. Will's favorite class just happens to be US history. US history is his favorite class because he loves to learn about our country's past and the wars that we have been in. One piece of lucrative information that many people like to keep a secret is their middle name. Luckily for us, Will has told us his middle name; it is Colton. When asked who his favorite celebrity is Will responded with A.J. Green. If Will could go anywhere, he would go to the Caribbean because it is hot, tropical, and beautiful. If Will could b e any animal he would be an eagle so he could fly from place to place. One of the most important questions of the century Will answered oddly. To him it is a grilled cheese toasty, never heard of that one but hey, there is a first time for everything. Somethings that Will likes to do in his spare time are draw, read, workout, hang with friends, and go to campus life. Lastly, Will's favorite car is a 1969 plymouth cuda, because they are awesome!

B.A.D. Pinterest 11

After more snow days and another week off, the B.A.D. Boys are back just in time for Valentine's Day. This week the B.A.D. Boys are making their favorite food. During the filming there were some unfortunate technical difficulties, but that won't stop them from giving you, the sheeple, what you want. To recap last week, the Boys made paper airplanes and had to throw them down the hall. The results were Blake coming in first, Drew with a controversial second place, and Austin coming in last. The standings are Blake in first with 27, Drew in second with 22, and Austin in last with 22. Drew has been M.I.A since this video and weird things have been happening around the school.

Lady Raiders Win First Game In Journey to Sectional Title

On Tuesday night, the Lady Raider Basketball team took on the Daleville Broncos in the first game of the Girls Basketball Sectional. The Raiders were on a high note from their win on Senior Night and were feeling were very confident. The Raiders started the game off strong with a 14-0 lead to end the first quarter. The Raiders kept their lead during the second quarter with the Raiders out scoring the Broncos 11-5. The Raiders came out of the locker room at half time and didn't miss a beat. They kept their lead throughout the rest of the game and won 54-19.

The Raiders will be back in action on Friday, February 13th at the Raider Dome. The team will take on the Cowan Blackhawks. Game starts at 6 p.m. Be there or be square.

Lady Raiders Get a Win For Senior Night

On Thursday, February 5th, the Lady Raider Basketball team played in their last regular season game. Both teams battled the Union City Indians. The JV started the night out strong by taking the early lead in their game going on a 8-0 run when the Indians called timeout. The Raiders kept their lead throughout the first half and finished the second half 47-20. In between the JV and Varsity game, the 6 Senior Lady Raiders were recognized. This Seniors this year are Allison Blevins, Savannah DeaKyne, Emilee Junk, Lela Knowles, Kiara Leas, and Timber Tucker. To begin the game, the Lady Raiders took the early lead, but that lead was quickly diminished by the Lady Indians three three point shots. During the second quarter, the Raiders fought back and took the lead going into half time. During the second half, the Raiders shots fell and took their lead to 15 points. The Raiders finished the game winning, 44-22.

The Lady Raiders will be back in action in Sectionals on Tuesday. Sectionals will take place at the Raider Dome. Come and support your Lady Raiders in their fight to win their ninth Sectional title.

Jessica's Book of the Week

This week's Book of the Week is What I Thought was True by Huntley Fitzpatrick.
Jacob Proffitt (screen name) rated What I Thought was True a 1 out of 5 stars. He thought that the book was an okay book, but he didn't like how it was based off past events. Then he thought that it constantly was going off the past, but the readers never knew what happened in the past. So, the readers were always confused.

Bookables (screen name) rated What I Thought was True 5 out of 5 stars. She thought that the book was well written. She thought that all the different characters made the story very interesting. Bookables loved had Fitzpatrick based the characters present actions off their past events. She loved What I Thought was True. 

I would rate this book a 4 out of 5 because I did like the all the different characters, but I was confused through a lot of the book. I really liked how Fitzpatrick had many different characters. They were all so different, which made the book constantly interesting. I would recommend this book because it was a nice read and also enjoy able to read.

Patriots Win The Superbowl

Superbowl 49 was a very good game the whole time. Both teams struggled to score early. Neither team scored in the first quarter but both teams scored two touchdowns in the second. In the third quarter the seahawks outscored the patriots by ten. Just when everybody thought that the Patriots were going to lose Tom Brady brought back the Patriots and gave them a 4 point lead with just under three minutes left. Russel Wilson drove the Seahawks to the one yard line with them about to win the game, but then threw an interception on a sketchy play call. The Patriots went on the game with Tom Brady getting the Superbowl MVP, winning his fourth Superbowl.

Raiders vs. Blue River Valley

The Raiders will play the Blue River Valley Vikings at home tomorrow night. The game is also youth night for the future Raiders. The game is projected to be close, so come out and support the Raiders and watch a good night of basketball. JV tip-off is at 6p.m followed by the Varsity at 7:30.

Student of The Week

For student of the week we have Fletcher Sabinske! Some of the things that Fletcher does, thinks, and learns tie together I think. Fletcher prefers to read books over watching movies because they have more time to pan out and give you more details. It also just happens to be that Fletcher's favorite subject and teacher are history 8 and Mrs. Hedden. He says history 8 is his favorite class because he likes to learn about how people used to live and survive, and that Mrs. Hedden was his favorite teacher because she gave favorable amounts of homework, and helped you if you needed it! Some other info about  fletcher is that he doesn't mind going to school in a circle, he wants to be an electrician when he grows up, and his middle name is Matthew. It just so happens to be that Fletcher's celebrity crush is Ariana Grande, and if he could go anywhere he would go to holiday world because they have unlimited soft drink refills. Fletcher's favorite food is pizza, and when asked if he could be any animal he said," I'd be a dragon, because who wouldn't want to be a dragon?" Lastly Fletcher likes to eat, sleep, play video games, and read. Fletcher's favorite car is a buick century because it holds up very well. This is only a tad that Fletcher has shared with us at the S-Dub Hub.

Super Bowl Commercials

This year was Super Bowl 49 between the defending Super Bowl champs Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots.  With only little time of actually showing the game the other time spent was on commercials.  Most of the game was full of commercials advertising and talking about their companies product.  My favorite commercial was the commercial about the new movie coming out called Jurassic World.  In the movie they try to create a full functioning dinosaur theme park with real dinosaurs.  My other favorite commercial was the Red's Apple Ale commercial where the guy in the commercial look exactly like Mr. Burman.  The commercials this year weren't as good as ones in the past, but they could have been better.

 

Tough loss for Raiders against Whitko

On Tuesday, your Raiders battled the Whitko Wildcats, and got a tough loss that they probably should've won. The Raiders went into halftime, winning by four at 26-22, with help from Keaton Coleman's 16 points. The Raiders came out flat in the third quarter and got out scored 21-11, which is what killed the Raiders. Whitko hit a lot of free throws in the fourth quarter to put the game away with a final score of 55-46.

Super Bowl XLIX

This year was Super Bowl 49 for the NFL and as I predicted the Pats capitalized on the season and won 28 to 24. It came down to the last second on the game it was the bottom of the fourth quarter and Seattle had the ball on the 1 yard line and decided to pass instead of running the ball. A huge mistake because Pats intercepted it in the endzone for the W. Seeing as how Seattle has the best Running back in the game it was a major mistake on the coaching staff to not just run it in! LETS GO PATS!!

Raiders Fighting to the End for the Win

On Saturday, both the JV and Varsity defeated the Woodlen Warriors at nail biting moments. The JV girls defeated the Warriors in overtime. The Lady Raiders won 42 to 39. At the start of overtime the score was 34 to 34. The Raiders started hitting free throws in the overtime to win the game. The JV worked very well together throughout the game.
However, the excitement didn't end there, the Varsity had a close game the whole game. The Raiders didn't give up throughout the game. The Raiders won 41 to 40. Lela Knowles had the game winning lay up to win the game. The Raiders played as a unit and never gave up on one another. It was a great night for the Lady Raiders.

Wins and Battles

Tuesday the 3rd the Lady Raiders faced the Black Hawk Braves. The JV Lady Raiders annihilated the Braves. The JV girls played well as a team. They made a lot of shots, put pressure on the ball, and just worked well together. The final score for the JV game was 47 to 18.
Unfortunately, the Varsity girls weren't as lucky to get a win. The Varsity Lady Raiders struggled throughout the game. The girls couldn't get shots to fall. Black Hawk just made more shots and caused more turnovers than the Raiders, which resulted in the final score that was 44 Braves to 41 Raiders.

Raider boys go down to Starfires

On Friday, January 30, the Raiders took on the South Adams Starfires, but weren't pleased with the outcome. The Raiders came out to a strong start, making the game 7-2. But the Starfires quickly took over the game, with a halftime score of 44-17. The Raiders couldn't overcome the Starfires strategic defense as they played a Diamond and 1, and face guarded Keaton Coleman the whole game. The Raiders really struggled to score, as the final score was 75-45. Evan Huffman led the team in scoring with nine points.

Student Of The Week

There is more than meets the eye when it comes to Savannah Deakyne. For instance, between movies and books Savannah prefers movies over books. Her reasoning is that the books take a lot longer to read even though they give you more detail. It seems a little in-coincidental that Savannah's favorite subject is science, because she has always had a niche for it, and she plans to go to college to be a radiologist later in life. Some other general information about Savannah. Her middle name is Elizabeth, her celebrity crush happens to be Matthew Mcconaughey, and her favorite teacher is Mr. Leichty. If Savannah could go anywhere, she would go to Greece, because of the beautiful architecture with the houses and the way that the environment interacts with the beauty of the houses and the water. On the regards of food, Savannah's favorite food is her mom's own home made pizza, and to her it is a grilled cheese... she is an ally. This is just a small amount that goes in to Savannah, the person whom many of us call a friend.

Jessica's Book of the Week

The week book is Bittersweet by Sarah Ockler.
Haleema (screen name) rated Bittersweet two out of five stars. She that Bittersweet was too cliche. She felt like certain scenes were so girly, that you could pretty much call what was coming next. She thought that Bittersweet was like a lot of other books. She thought that characters betrayed the same character traits that show up in other books. Haleema saw the main character as quiet and shy (like in all books), while the best friend was loud and funny. She just thought that the book was too cliche.
Laura (screen name) rated Bittersweet five out of five stars. She thought that Bittersweet was very relatable. She thought that the book explained the choice of staying and leaving really well. Laura loved how Ockler caught the emotions of the choices the characters had to make. Laura loved this book and strongly encourages you to read Bittersweet. 

I would rate this book four out of five stars. I loved how it was written, but I sometimes thought that things didn't develop. I would recommend this book though, because it was a nice little read. I did really like how the main character thought out her problems through the making of cupcakes. I thought that Ockler made the main character very interesting because of her cupcake talent. I would recommend Bittersweet as a nice Saturday read.

Lady Raiders Lose to the Knights

On Tuesday, January 27th, the Lady Raiders traveled to Southwood High School to take on the Knights. The JV Raiders lost to the JV Knights by two. The final score was 32 to 30. The JV girls struggled with making shots towards the end of the game. In the Varsity game, the Raiders struggled to make jump shots and didn't play defense to the best of their ability. The Raiders fell the the Lady Knights 46-20.

The Lady Raiders will be back in action on Saturday at the Raider Dome at 6 pm.

Wrestling ACAC

The wrestling ACAC tournament that was held at Jay County was a tough day for all of the Southern Wells wrestlers. Through all of the stiff competition Jacob Stout and TC Perry managed to come out with a championship win in their weight classes. That following Monday Levi Jones was asked about this upcoming sectional tournament and Levi had stated that just about every weight class being represented by Southern Wells has a good chance to move onto regional.

B.A.D. Pinterest Episode 10

The B.A.D. boys are back in action this week with yet another episode. This week the boys decided they wanted to fly, or something close to it. They were tasked to build their best paper airplanes in just 15 minutes, and let them fly down the hallway. The results were hilarious. The results from last week had Blake coming in first, Austin coming in second, and Drew's ponytail coming in last.

 

Raider Boys' Varsity fall to Jay County again

The Varsity boys team traveled to Jay County Saturday night after a long Friday night at Leo.  It was a weird night for all Raiders, as the girls also played at Jay County too. The boys JV game was more positive for Raider fans as the JV team got a win over the Patriots 46 to 38. But the Varsity game was not very fun for the Raiders. The Patriots have the best defense in the state, only allowing their opponents to score an average of 33 points per game. Raiders were only able to put up 3 points by halftime. They had a much better second half, scoring 24 points. The game ended with a dominate win for Jay County at 66-27. The Raiders will be back in action Tuesday night at home against Muncie Burris. Come out and support.

Raiders Fall To Lions

The Raiders fell to the Leo Lions 47-87 on Friday night at Leo. The Lions moved to 15-0 and continued their perfect season. They are one of the 3 teams in the state who still have a undefeated record. Leo is 3rd in the 3A state rankings. Despite the score, the Raiders played hard until the final buzzard. The Raiders started the game off good, which they have struggled with throughout the year taking a quick 7-3 lead. Than the Lions caught fire and made it look almost impossible to miss. The Raiders the next day traveled to Jay county for Junior Varsity and Varsity action.

Riley Week!

This week, the Southern Wells Student Council is sponsoring Riley Week. All proceeds will benefit Riley's Children's Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. There are many fun events taking place this week such as dress-up days, raffles, and a bake sale. Bring one dollar a day to dress up or bring five for the week and get a bracelet. Raffle tickets are $1 for one or $5 for 6. Teachers can pay $5 to wear jeans all week or $20 to wear sweatpants! Come ready to raise money for a great cause!

 

Lady Raiders Put the Beat Down on the Warriors

On Tuesday, January 20th, the Lady Raiders took on the Wes-del Warriors at Wes-del High School. The team had prepared for the Warriors on Monday at practice and were feeling very confident on getting the win. In the beginning of the game, the Raiders took the early lead with a game opening lay up by Senior Lela Knowles. Throughout the game, the Raiders kept their lead going into halftime with a score of 27-13. During the second half, the Raiders came out on fire and outscored the the Warriors 39-13. The Raiders won the game 66-26.

The Lady Raiders are back in action on Saturday at Jay County in the Boys and Girls Double header starting at 5 p.m.

Up on the Block this time around for student of the week we have Codie Oneal! Trying to keep things as cool as possible, and not having this article sound like a online dating profile, here is some info on Codie! Codie's favorite subject and teacher are band, choir, piano, and Mr. Haigh. I asked Codie how he felt about going to school in a circle he said, "I feel like it is very easy to get around and good for getting to each class on time." Some other interesting fact about Codie are his middle name is Eugene, when he grows up he wants to become a singer for a worship band, and he prefers movies over books because they give him more if a visual rather than books. We have all thought of being an animal one time or another, and when I asked Codie what animal he would be he promptly responded with the arctic wolf, the arctic wolf is a very interesting animal. Codie gave me one of the most interesting answers I have had when asking who a person's celebrity crush is. Codie told me, " I don't really have one, I am not one that is into crushing on many girls because I find it pointless to have a crush on somebody unless you know them personally. In my opinion one of the most important questions Codie answered it correctly in my eyes. To Codie, it is the Grilled cheese sandwich not a cheese toastie. Be sure to give Codie a high five in the hallway.

John Gearheart:     Next week The NE Patriots and Seattle Seahawks will face of in the Super Bowl. And I think it is fair to say that the sure lock winner is the Pats, here is the reason why! The Seahawks have absolutely no talent in the Quarterback position while the Pats have one of the greatest of all time! Brady is going to run all over Seattle's defence! Not to mention that the best corner in the league plays for the Pats Darrelle Revis. Its going to be any easy game for the Pats in my opinion! My prediction is Pats by 28.

Hunter Schreiber:     With John's terrible prediction of Super Bowl I will have to strongly disagree with him.  I would have to disagree with him about Tom Brady, because Seattle's defense is just too good.  When you have the best defensive back in the league, Richard Sherman, shutting down one side of the field it is nearly impossible to do anything good.  Along with Richard Sherman, the Seahawks also have the best running back in the league named Marshawn Lynch.  Lynch is a bulldozer of a running back plowing over all the defensive players in his way.  When you have two of the best players in the league at their positions they become very difficult to beat.  My prediction is the Seahawks win by 21.

The Wedding Ringer - Movie Review

The Wedding Ringer rated R starring Kevin Hart, Josh Gad, and Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting. Socially awkward Doug Harris (Josh Gad) is two weeks from marrying the women of his dreams (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting), but he has a problem: He doesn't have any groomsmen for the occasion. Desperate and running out of time, Doug calls upon Jimmy Callahan (Kevin Hart), owner and operator of Best Man Inc., a company that provides attendants for friendless grooms. As Doug tries to pull off the con, a bromance unexpectedly blossoms between Jimmy and himself. This movie is hilarious and Kevin Hart and Josh Gad do an amazing job starring in it. It does a great job showing how two guys who don't even know eachother can work together and be great friends in only a matter of two short weeks. I would rate this move 5 stars I thought it was hilarious and definitely worth seeing.

B.A.D. Pinterest

Alright sheeple, your nightmare is finally over. B.A.D. Pinterest is back this week after a long Christmas break and a week full of closings and delays, and of the course the hacking. Be on the look out for the perpetrator who is still at large and extremely dangerous. This week's task was simple, yet complex. They had to do three unsuspecting girl's hair. The B.A.D. Boys had a time limit to do whatever they felt like doing to the hair. The standings are Blake in 1st with 21, Drew in 2nd with 18, and Austin closing in on Drew in last with 15. 2015 Pro Bowl

This Sunday is the 2015 NFL Pro Bowl. The teams playing this year is Team Irvin against Team Carter. Wednesday night was the Pro Bowl draft. The team captains named for each team were Antonio Brown (Steelers) and J.J. Watt (Texans) for Team Carter. For Team Irvin Demarco Murray (Cowboys) and Joe Haden (Browns). Both teams decided to draft a quarterback with the first overall pick. The first pick went to Team Carter and he drafted The Colts Andrew Luck and Team Irvin drafted Tony Romo from the Cowboys. Taken 3 - Movie Review

This last Monday, on our snow day off, I went to the Huntington 7 movie theater and watched Taken 3 starring Liam Neeson. This film was very good and action packed just like the previous two movies. I however, thought the movie fell short to my expectations and wasn't as good as I wanted it to be, but I was still very happy with the movie. Without giving too much away the movie is about Liam Neeson tracking down the killers and solving the murder of his wife's death which he was framed for. I would rate this movie an 8/10 because Liam Neeson in his role as Bryan Mills uses all of his skills to prove to the CIA, FBI, and police that he is innocent and was framed. No one in the movie really got "taken" like in the first two, so I think the movie should've had a different name. This movie is very suspenseful and action packed and you have no idea who the killer is until the very end. It definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat. They set the ending of the film up perfectly for there to be a Taken 4, so I would not be surprised if in a few years we see Maggie Grace (Kim) and Liam Neeson staring again in another movie.

Raiders Lose To Jay County

The Raiders hosted Jay County tuesday in the opening round of the ACAC tournament. The Raiders came out and had trouble scoring on the very tough Jay County Defense. The Raiders first points came midway through the second quarter from captain Keaton Coleman. The Raiders played hard on defense holding Jay County to only 24 first half points, but the Raiders lack of scoring hurt. At half they trailed by a score of 24-6. The second half was a lot more even but the Raiders first half deficit was too much to overcome. The Raiders fell to a final score of 46-20. The Raiders will play Saturday at 10 AM in the Raiderdome in the consolation bracket against Adam Central.  The girls will play Adams Central following the boys game.

Are Snow Days a Good Thing?

In the first two weeks back from break, we experienced a few delays and a few closings. Snow days give us a break from the homework, notes, test, etc. But with these days off, we make them up in the summer, where the weather is beautiful, warm, and bright. Here are a few students' opinions on snow days.


Jessica Yencer- "Snow days are a good thing because you get to be lazy all day, and then go to Taco Bell, and the library and then go cuddle up with a book."
Brant Mechling- "I plead the 5th."
Mason Stevens- "I dislike snow days because I like the summer."
Tess Gilbert- "I dislike them because I can't see people."
Sam Smith- "I love them because I don't do anything."
Landon Lenwell- "I don't because I have to stay home when my parents are gone."
Cole Meeks- "I do because I can clean the sidewalk for my church."

Staying healthy during the Winter months

As you may know, it is pretty hard for most people to stay completely healthy during the Winter months. It's hard to make sure you take care of yourself. Here are a few things to do to make yourself a little healthier during the Winter months:
-Wash your hands after using the restroom
-Drink water
-Eat healthy
-Get a flu shot
-Try not to touch public objects
-Use hand sanitizer
-Get a good amount of exercise
-Get a good night's sleep every night

Xbox or PS3

Hunter:  When it comes to gaming which type of system do your prefer.  The type of system I prefer is a PS3 rather than a Xbox 360.  I prefer PS3 because PS3 of three simple reasons.  The first reason I prefer PS3 is because, the PlayStation Network is free.  PlayStation Network is the ability to play games online against friends, or random people.  With Xbox you have to pay to play online.  The second reason is because the PS3 comes with a blu-ray drive, so you can watch Blu-ray movies on it.  Blu-ray movies are better quality, and better than regular movies.  Xbox can only play original movies.  The third and final reason why I think the PS3 is better, is because with PS3 controllers they are easier to charge.  Some Xbox controllers are rechargeable, but all PS3 controllers are all rechargeable.  The PS3 controllers can be charging, while playing your game. For these reasons are why I prefer and think PS3 is better than Xbox.

John: Xbox 360 is a newer console that has better graphics and a better processing system than PS3, also many Large Name Video game producers only make their games for Xbox and not PS3. Bungie is one if not the best producer of games they have produced Platinum hit games such as the Halo series. This is arguably the best gaming series of all time those who think otherwise have never played them and cant put forth a valid opinion. As for the controller argument stated earlier by Hunter, Yes PS3 controllers are rechargeable but they also are not comfortable to hold in your hand they just simply do not fit properly. Some features that Xbox offers are an easily navigable dashboard, their own online movie and game purchasing system. The only real advantage to PS3 is the online is free.

The man, the myth, the legend Spank

Starting this week I will be having interviews with athletes throughout the school, to help you get to know our schools players a little bit better. This week's interview will be with Keaton Coleman.

1. First of all, how did you get the nickname "Spank"?
-... no comment

2. When did you start playing basketball?
-Kindergarten

3. How are you feeling coming off the knee injury?
-I am feeling nervous, and pressured because I know that my team needs me perform well

4. How do you feel being a two time North vs South all-star?
-It is a great honor, the games are very fun and are a great opportunity for college scouts to find good high school basketball players.

5. What have you done to become the two time 2nd team all conference player?
-Have big moments, hit big shots, try to do every little thing right, and do what the coach asks

6. You are also a 2 year regional qualifier for high jump and ACAC champion last year, and a one year regional qualifier for shot put, what in your mind, is your most impressive accomplishment?
-Probably being an ACAC champion in high jump, because I had to beat a 6'4" very athletic Jaylin Bennet who is now playing running back at Indiana State University.

7. Basketball or track?
- That is a very tough question because I love the way that I'm a lone athlete in track because it's not really a team sport, but basketball has been my sport since I was 5.

Lady Raiders Fall to Jay County in ACAC Tournament

On Tuesday, January 13,  the Lady Raider Basketball team took on the Jay County Lady Patriots in the first round of the ACAC tournament. The game took place after the Varsity boys game. The Jay County Patriots are 5-0 in the conference and the Lady Raiders are 1-4. To start off the game, the Lady Raiders took the early lead 5-0 with Senior Savannah DeaKyne having a lay-up and a three point shot. The Patriots fought back and took the lead going into the second quarter. After halftime, the Patriots kept their lead. At the end of the third quarter, the Raiders fought back and took a five point lead going into the fourth quarter. The last quarter the lead went back and forth between the Patriots and the Raiders. The final three minutes, Jay County had the lead and ended up winning by seven points

The Lady Raiders will be back in action on Saturday, January 17 at the Raider Dome against the Adams Central Jets in the consolation game. Come out and support your team!

Student of The Week

This week for student of the week we at the S-Dub Hub have chosen Brandt Couch.  A little bit about Brandt, when it comes to which he prefers between books and movies he chooses movies because he likes to be entertained and there aren't very many books that entertain and intrigue him. When I asked Brandt what his favorite school subject is he responded with Ag management. He responded with Ag management not only because he wants to pursue a career in Ag but also because he can relate to many to many of the topics that they cover. It just so happens to be that Brandt's favorite teacher at the school is Mr. Stauffer, no coincidence considering Brandts favorite subject is Ag management and he also wants to pursue a degree in Ag. Using that degree in Ag he wants to be an agronomist and hopefully own his own small livestock operation. It just so turns out that Brandt's middle name is Steven. When asked who his celebrity crush is Brandt replied with Sophia Bush. If he could go anywhere Brandt would go to Saskatchewan, Canada to go hunting. His favorite meal is one surely fit for a king, Brandt's favorite meal would be a rib-eye steak with grilled garlic shrimp mashed potatoes and a caesar salad. If brandt could be one animal he would be a white tail deer so he could figure out how they slip past him every year. This is only a small bit about Brandt. If you see him in the hallway be sure to say hi and give him a high-five!

Raider wrestling against Norwell

The win for the raiders at Norwell started with the weight class 170, and since our Raider wrestling team doesn't have a 170 the night started with Norwell getting 6 team points due to a forfeit. The first match was Ethan Smith at 182, getting one takedown before getting the pin. Next in the Raider lineup was Nik Roberts with one takedown, one escape, and an impressive two reversals before finally pinning his opponent. The next Raider to compete was Jimmy McQueary with a nail biting match that resulted in his win with three takedowns. Representing the Raiders for the smaller weights was Steven Jones getting one takedown then very quickly pinning his opponent from Norwell. The only Raider loss on the night came from Wesley Moore. For the final match was Paul Renner getting three takedowns and finishing off his opponent with a pin.
